5 Innovative and Successful Indian Startups By IIT Graduates

IITs are full of innovative and talented students. The startup culture is now rampant in India. Startups are coming up in IIT dorm rooms across India. They have created some of the hottest tech jobs in the country. Some of the startups have become so hot that they are valuated at billions of dollars.

Here’s a list of some of the most innovative and successful startups in India founded by IIT graduates.

Flipkart

Flipkart, the most valuable company in India (currently valued at $12.5 billion as of March, 2015 ) was founded by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal. Both of them hales from Chandigarh and are an alumni of Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

Both of them were working for Amazon, before they left and founded Flipkart. While working for Amazon, they realized that the eCommerce market in India was very small. They started with selling books similarly how Amazon did almost 2 decades ago. Flipkart’s Cash On Delivery model became an instant hit in India’s eCommerce industry. Now almost all the companies are following in Flipkart’s footsteps.

Flipkart is now the biggest online marketplace in India and it’s rivals include the likes of Amazon and Snapdeal.

Olacabs

Olacabs founded in December, 2010 has now become one of the biggest taxi hiring firms in the country. In October 2014, it raised $210 million from Softbank and Media Inc. The company was founded by Sandeep Ola and Ankit Bhati. Sandeep is a graduate of IIT Dhanbad.

It’s currently present in all the major cities of India. In March, 2015, Olacabs bought TaxiForSure for $200 million. For those who don’t know TaxiForSure is another taxi hiring firm.

TravelTriangle

TravelTriangle was Sankalp Agarwal and Sanchit Garg. Both of them graduated from IIT Kharagpur. They were working at Adobe and Yahoo respectively before founding TravelTriangle.

They started the company from a garage at Noida. Their business model links customers with Travel agents. Whenever, a customer places a request, they are linked to at least 3 travel agents. The 3 agents then compete with themselves to provide the best deals to the customer.

Bluegape

Bluegape was founded in August, 2011 by Ayush Varshney and Sahil Baghla. Both them are from IIT Kanpur. The inspiration came to them when they wanted to print a poster.

With Rs. 2 lakhs, they created the venture from their hostel rooms. Initially, their clientele were only from within the campus. Few months later, they took it to the national level by taking orders online.

Basically anyone can send a image or picture to them and they will print the poster and deliver it to them within 4-10 business days.

Knowlarity

Knowlarity was founded in 2009 by Ambarish Gupta and Pallav Pandey. Both of them graduated from IIT Kanpur. Before founding Knowlarity, both of them worked at global consulting firm McKinsey.

Knowlarity is a cloud telephony company aimed at small and medium enterprises. Knowlarity provides a platform for voice application services hosted on a remote server.
